Report: Auston Matthews signs in Swiss league

On Saturday a report in The Hockey News had 2016 NHL Draft prospect Auston Matthews considering offers to play in Europe next season.

According to swisshockeynews.ch, Matthews has signed with the ZSC Lions.

The Everett Silvertips own Matthews’ Western Hockey League rights and several NCAA schools have been pursuing the 17-year-old.

Sportsnet’s Damien Cox reports Matthews could earn in the neighborhood of $500,000 playing in Europe. The Scottsdale, Arizona native would still be eligible to play for the U.S. at the World Junior Hockey Championship and potentially next year’s World Hockey Championship.

Matthews appeared in 24 games with the U.S. National Under-18 Team this season scoring 20 goals and 48 points.

Former NHL head coach Marc Crawford is currently the coach of Zurich and the roster features former NHLers Henrik Tallinder, Ryan Keller, Marc-Andre Bergeron, Dan Fritsche, Robert Nilsson and Ryan Shannon.

Veteran NHLer Bergeron signs in Switzerland

Journeyman defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron will play overseas next season.

Bergeron, 32, has signed a deal with Zurich ZSC of the Swiss National A League, where he will skate under longtime NHL head coach Marc Crawford, who took the Zurich job last season.

Bergeron spent the 2013 campaign with Tampa Bay and Carolina, racking up 1G-8A in 25 games.

Prior to that, he carved himself a reputation as an offensive defenseman and power play specialist, scoring a career-high 46 points in 2006-07 as he split time between the Oilers and New York Islanders organizations.

It wouldn’t be surprising for Bergeron to get a call from an NHL club at some point during the season, as an injury replacement, stopgap PP solution or for depth as the playoffs draw close.

He does have extensive postseason experience, going to the Stanley Cup Final with Edmonton in 2006 and the Eastern Conference finals twice (once with Montreal, once with Tampa Bay).

‘Canes letting Corvo, Ellis, LaRose go to market

Sounds like a number of veteran Hurricanes are unlikely to be back with the club next year.

Carolina GM Jim Rutherford confirmed the club is letting defenseman Joe Corvo and goalie Dan Ellis become unrestricted free agents on July 5, along with forwards Chad LaRose and Tim Brent and defensemen Bobby Sanguinetti and Marc-Andre Bergeron.

“We will let them go into free agency,” Rutherford told the Raleigh News & Observer. “We’ll see if some make it back to us or if we make it back to them.”

Corvo, 36, has done three tours of duty with the ‘Canes — 2007-09, 2010-11 and 2013. He appeared in 40 games last season, scoring 6G-11A-17PTS while averaging close to 19 minutes per night.

Ellis, 32, recently told the Observer he and the ‘Canes were “talking back and forth” about a new deal, but those talks seemed to have cooled.

The journeyman netminder signed in Carolina last season on a one-year, $800,000 deal, primarily to serve as a veteran backup to starter Cam Ward — then got forced into starting duty when Ward was lost for the year with a knee injury.

Ellis went 6-8-2 with a .906 save percentage and 3.13 GAA, occasionally splitting duties with third-stringer Justin Peters.

Of the other remaining UFAs, LaRose is probably the most notable.

He’s spent his entire eight-year career in Carolina, appearing in over 500 regular season games and 39 playoff contests — 21 of which came during the Stanley Cup run of 2006.

LaRose, 31, had a good year in 2011-12, scoring 19G-13A-32PTS — a career-high in points, despite only playing 67 games.

Waiver claims: Flyers get Hall, Jets snag Santorelli

A pair of waiver moves came down prior to Wednesday’s trade deadline as the Philadelphia Flyers took Adam Hall off the wire from Tampa, and the Jets nabbed Mike Santorelli from Florida.

Hall, 32, appeared in 20 games for the Bolts this season, scoring 0G-4A-4PTS while averaging over 10 minutes per game.

He also had a brief stint with the ‘Canes (after Tampa put him on waivers the first time), failing to register a point in six games.

Hall was traded back to the Lightning on Tuesday (Carolina got Marc-Andre Bergeron in exchange), and promptly put on waivers. Again.

In case you’re curious about Hall’s role/style of play, he was sitting second among all Tampa Bay forwards in shortanded time on ice per game (2:11) and ranked fifth among all forwards in hits prior to getting moved.

He’s also fairly handy in the faceoff circle, winning 56.4 percent of his draws.

As for Winnipeg, they got former 20-goal scorer Santorelli, who has failed to make much of an impact after his 41-point outburst two seasons ago.

The 27-year-old had played in 24 games for the Panthers this season, scoring 2G-1A-3PTS while averaging 11:06 TOI per game.

Santorelli was actually placed on waivers yesterday but still played in Florida’s 3-2 shootout win over Tampa Bay, playing over 13 minutes while recording one shot on goal.

As TSN’s Darren Dreger notes, the Jets claimed Santorelli to offset the loss of forward Nik Antropov, who was hurt last night and will reportedly miss the next two weeks with a lower-body injury.
