Lack’s latest chance to get on track comes in trade to Devils

Mike Smith has been a smashing success for the Calgary Flames, but the other part of their complete goalie makeover hadn’t really worked out. So, with that, Eddie Lack gets another chance to resurrect his career, this time landing with the New Jersey Devils.

The Devils sent depth defenseman Dalton Prout to Calgary to complete the trade.

To be fair to Lack, he didn’t get a ton of chances to get things together in Calgary. To be fair to the Flames, you could understand if they viewed giving too many starts to Lack as essentially throwing away games.

Take a look at how his four appearances played out in Calgary:

Oct. 13: Allowed one goal on six shots on goal in 12:02 of time against the Senators.
Oct. 25: Took a loss, allowed four goals on 28 SOG in a full game against the Blues.
Nov. 13: Allowed two goals on 15 SOG, once again vs. the Blues, in two periods of work. This was his only win with the Flames.
Nov. 15: Gave up five goals on 15 SOG against the Red Wings, barely making it into the second period. His final appearance with Calgary.

Overall, Lack went 1-2-0 with hideous individual stats: a 5.29 GAA(!) and a terrible .813 save percentage.

With Cory Schneider as the workhorse in New Jersey, and considering his struggles, it’s no surprise that Lack is at least initially headed to the AHL. It will be interesting to see if he can turn his career around. The last few seasons don’t inspire a ton of confidence, but it’s not as though he received a lot of opportunities to get it together, either. (Lack also generated a .916 save percentage in five games with the AHL’s Stockton Heat this season.)

There are at least some who wonder if some of his issues stem from coaching in Carolina, so maybe he can piece his game back together? We’ve seen goalies go off the rails only to rebound before, with examples such as Devan Dubnyk, Braden Holtby (remember the year Adam Oates’ staff messed with his style?), and Steve Mason coming to mind.

The Devils would probably be happy to see him merely return to the strong backup form he showed briefly with the Vancouver Canucks. The clock is ticking – he’s already 29 – but considering his NHL-friendly size and small sample of success, a renaissance isn’t totally out of the question.

If nothing else, we might get a few more taco jokes out of the deal.

NHL reveals all 30 teams’ available, protected players for expansion draft

That moment is finally upon us: the NHL released protected and available players lists for all 30 teams regarding the Vegas Golden Knights’ expansion draft on Sunday.

As you’ll see, teams generally chose two alignments:

1. Protecting four forwards, four defensemen, and one goalie.

– 0r –

2. Protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie.

The New York Islanders interestingly bucked the trend, protecting five defensemen.

While you dream up armchair GM (or armchair GM GM, in the case of George McPhee) scenarios, do note that the Golden Knights must meet these requirements as they select 30 players overall:

Also remember that McPhee can strike deals with teams to not pick certain exposed players, though such arrangement will come at a price. In addition to that note, it’s crucial to remember that younger players might not be exposed just because they weren’t protected, as some are exempt.

Got the basics? Good. The league lists the expansion draft rules here if you want to dive into the full details.

Excuse the big list, but here are all the players who are available and protected for each team.

Prout suspended two games for ‘exacting retribution’ on Gudas

New Jersey defenseman Dalton Prout has been suspended two games for a retaliatory hit on Philly’s Radko Gudas, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced on Monday.

The incident occurred midway through the second period of Saturday’s game, shortly after Gudas delivered a hard — but deemed legal — bodycheck on New Jersey forward John Quenneville.

Prout jumped onto the ice and went directly at Gudas. He was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for interference.

“Prout comes off the bench, makes no attempt to join the play in any manner, and instead targets a vulnerable player for the sole purpose of exacting retribution for an earlier play,” the DoPS explained. “And while the hit itself is not incredibly violent, the fact that Gudas is in no way prepared for a hit of any kind makes any type of body contact dangerous.”

As a result, Prout will now miss New Jersey’s next two games — including Tuesday’s rematch versus the Flyers — and will be eligible to return on Saturday, Apr. 8, when the Devils take on the Isles.

Devils’ Prout to have hearing for interference on Gudas

Dalton Prout is facing further discipline for his retaliatory hit on Radko Gudas during Saturday’s game between the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Sunday announced that Prout has a hearing scheduled for Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred when Gudas hit a Devils player at the blue line, leading to Prout coming in a few seconds later and delivering an open-ice hit well away from the puck on Gudas. A large melee ensued, including a fight between Wayne Simmonds and Prout.

In addition to his fighting major, Prout was given a major penalty for interference and a game misconduct.

Gudas briefly returned to the game but left after the second period with an upper-body injury.

Last March, Prout was suspended one game for a sucker punch on Nikita Kucherov.
