Anthony Peluso

Video: Hits, brawls, bad feelings between Caps and Jets

The Winnipeg Jets and Washington Capitals aren’t that far removed from being division rivals, so perhaps there are some residual bad feelings from those Southeast seasons?

Maybe not, but either way, the two teams erupted into a brawl highlighted by Jacob Trouba, Mark Scheifele, Tom Wilson and Michael Latta.

The Capitals were not pleased that Winnipeg ended up with a man advantage following this scene, and those sour feelings were only heightened when Andrew Ladd scored a power-play tally late in the opening frame.

There was also this Anthony Peluso hit on Wilson:

The big boys got after it early in Minnesota today.

Wild forward Kurtis Gabriel — all 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds of him — picked one of the toughest opponents in hockey on Friday, throwing down with Jets enforcer Anthony Peluso early in the first period.

And it was a pretty good tilt.

Peluso, one of the league’s most feared fighters, was coming off two pretty heavy scraps — one against Columbus tough guy Jared Boll, and another in which he landed some serious shots on overmatched Canucks d-man Luca Sbisa:

Of course, Gabriel’s no slouch.

He had one previous fight in the NHL this year (against Peluso’s teammate, Chris Thorburn) and five in the American League, where he’s spent the majority of this season.

Given the fisticuffs that occurred earlier in the Bruins-Rangers game, it seem the NHL has really gotten into the spirit of Black Friday.

Sounds like former first-rounder Armia’s on his way to Winnipeg (Updated)

Could Joel Armia’s Winnipeg Jets debut be on the horizon?

Certainly looks that way.

On Monday, Finnish news outlet Iltasanomat reported that Armia, one of the prospects acquired from Buffalo in last season’s Evander Kane trade, has been recalled from AHL Manitoba.

UPDATE: Yup, he’s on his way to the ‘Peg. The club confirmed the transaction on Monday morning, also announcing that goalie Ondrej Pavelec has been placed on IR.

Armia, 22, was taken 16th overall by the Sabres in 2011 and appeared in one game for the club before getting dealt to the Jets.

He’s spent most of his time in North America playing in the AHL — previously with Rochester, now with Manitoba — and, this season, has three goals and seven points in 15 games.

It’s unclear why the Jets are making the move at this time. There are no reported injuries at forward but, in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Arizona, forwards Andrew Copp and Anthony Peluso barely played (neither broke four minutes of TOI).

Those who are obsessed with hockey fights could kill some serious time breaking people up into “divisions.”

Tonight provided a pretty good example. Vancouver Canucks defenseman Luca Sbisa put his superior size on display when he delivered a hard hit on rising Winnipeg Jets rookie Nikolaj Ehlers, which you can watch in the video above.

That didn’t sit well with the Jets, apparently, as Anthony Peluso didn’t need much goading to drop the gloves with Sbisa. What happened felt a bit like a middleweight tussling with a heavyweight.

We’re only one period into Canucks – Jets and there have already been plenty of testy, nasty moments.

The good news is that, at least at the moment, it appears as though Ehlers is OK.

Sbisa may not be; he left the game in the second period and did not return.
