The Edmonton Oilers announced on Monday evening that team captain Connor McDavid tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the day.
McDavid has been voluntarily self quarantining in his home and is going to continued to be monitored.
According to the team, he is feeling well and experiencing mild symptoms.
A little more than a week ago the NHL completed its 2020 postseason that was played entirely within two bubble cities, Toronto and Edmonton.
During the two-month postseason, which featured 24 teams, the league conducted nearly 34,000 tests over nine weeks and did not report a single positive test result. McDavid is the first positive result that we know of since the postseason ended. The league had strict mask and social distancing rules in place within the two bubbles. The league reported two positives tests during training camp and 43 positive tests during Phase 2 (small group workouts at team facilities) of its Return To Play plan.
McDavid finished the 2019-20 season with 97 points (34 goals, 63 assists) in 64 games. He finished fifth in the MVP voting.
