Hockey Culture: Kelsey Koelzer on breaking down playing, coaching barriers

NBC Sports has launched Hockey Culture, a multi-platform content offering dedicated to bringing equality and inclusion to hockey. Led by NBC Sports NHL analyst Anson Carter, Hockey Culture will address contemporary topics within the sport, aim to promote diversity around the game and on the ice, and increase community engagement with hockey.

Anson Carter sits down with head women’s ice hockey coach of Arcadia University Kelsey Koelzer, who also happens to be the first Black player to be the top pick in a professional North American hockey league draft.

Koelzer discusses the biases she encountered during her playing days, her ideas for how to facilitate greater access to hockey for minorities, and the unique opportunity she has to build a college program from scratch.
