PHT Morning Skate: Penguins honor Jaromir Jagr

-- Jaromir Jagr played his 1,700th game in the NHL on Sunday afternoon when the Florida Panthers visited the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pittsburgh, of course, being Jagr’s first team in the NHL and the stop where he played his best hockey, winning several scoring titles and two Stanley Cups. The Penguins honored him on Sunday afternoon (seen in the video above) for recently being named to the league’s 100 greatest players list. For as great as Jagr was in Pittsburgh his exit in the early 2000s created some bitterness that resulted in a lot of boos upon every return and the team, at times, going out of its way to not acknowledge him. All of that has started to change for the better in recent years.

-- Brian Elliott is on some kind of a roll for the Calgary Flames right now, and thanks to his 19-save effort in their 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday night he was able to tie the franchise record for longest winning streak by a goaltender by collecting his 11th consecutive win. Mike Vernon also won 11 consecutive games for the Flames during the 1988-89 season. Along with the streak, Elliott is 15-1-1 in his past 17 starts.

-- Paul Byron scored his 20th goal of the season for the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday night and talked about the game about whether or not he thought that he would ever get back to the NHL.

-- The Coyotes made a couple of call-ups on Sunday, bringing Zbynek Michalek and Laurent Dauphin up from the AHL. Michalek, a long-time NHL veteran including two different stops with the Coyotes, has not played in the big leagues this season. In 43 games with Tuscon of the AHL he has six goals and eight assists.

-- The Winnipeg Jets recalled defenseman Brian Strait on Sunday after spending the entire season to this point playing in the American Hockey League. He played 15:41 and recorded an assist in their 5-4 win over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday evening.

-- Anze Kopitar netted his 10th goal of the season for the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday in their loss to the Calgary Flames. It has been a tough year for Kopitar offensively as he is currently on track for the worst offensive numbers of his 11-year career.
