Back in North America after an eye-opening stint in the KHL, veteran defenseman James Wisniewski is hoping to catch the attention of an NHL team.

Wisniewski recently signed with the St. Louis Blues’ AHL affiliate in Chicago. He started the season on a tryout with Tampa Bay, but when that didn’t work out he ended up in Russia playing for Admiral Vladivostok.

“I was hoping NHL teams would be like, ‘Oh, he’s playing games.’ But I came to find out that when you’re gone out of North America, you’re kind of out of sight, out of mind,” Wisniewski told Postmedia’s Michael Traikos. “That’s why I really wanted to come back. All of a sudden to be out of the NHL is a shock. I didn’t think it was going to go down like that.”

The 33-year-old is off to a good start in the AHL with two goals and one assists in three games. A right shot, it could even make sense for the Blues to sign him if they trade Kevin Shattenkirk before March 1.
