Canada has dominated over the years at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup and now the annual U-18 summer tournament is going north of the border.

The event is owned by the governing bodies for hockey in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and is traditionally held in August every year.

It features the top eight national hockey programs in the world competing against each other on the international stage and beginning in 2018, the tournament will be held in Edmonton on a bi-annual basis, the Oilers announced Monday.

“The Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup is a significant event on our calendar for many reasons, the first of which is that it honours a great player and coach who was taken from us far too soon,” said Hockey Canada president and CEO Tom Renney on Monday.

“The event itself is uniquely positioned on the calendar to truly allow for all of the participating nations – and for the hundreds of NHL scouts who are attracted to the event – to take part in a best-on-best competition with the top under-18 players from around the world.”

According to CBC, the event, which will run on Canadian soil in 2018, 2020 and 2022, will take place at the brand new Rogers Place.

Since the tournament began in 1991, Canada has won gold 20 times, with two silver medals and one bronze.

That included eight straight gold medals, although that impressive run came to an end this summer, when Canada failed to earn a medal.
