NHL on NBC: Rangers and Flyers do battle in Black Friday matinee game

The NHL on NBC is back with a Black Friday matchup between the Rangers and Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Puck drop is at 1:00 p.m. ET and you can watch the game online by clicking here.

The Rangers are coming off a home-and-away series with the Penguins. New York won a 5-2 decision in Pittsburgh on Monday, but they lost the second game at MSG, 6-1, on Wednesday.

“I hope everybody holds themselves accountable,” captain Ryan McDonagh said, per the New York Daily News. “If you’re happy or satisfied with whatever you did out there (Wednesday,) it’s not where we want to be. We haven’t had many games like this and I certainly have confidence in our group, and our veterans are going to help everybody here get back on the right page.”

Their ability to play fast has led them to a great start (14-6-1), but some holes are starting to show over their last few games. The Rangers have dropped three of their last four contests and the advanced stats show that they’ve slipped.

For the Flyers, staying out of the box will be key. They failed to do that in their 4-2 loss to the Lightning on Wednesday night.

Philadelphia killed six of Tampa Bay’s seven power play attempts, but the energy they expended while on the PK might have played a part in them blowing a 2-1 lead in the third period.

“Too many penalties overall,” goalie Steve Mason said after the loss, per Philly.com. “It disrupts the flow of the game and taxes the guys that are constantly on the penalty kill.”

Taking that many penalties, again, would be a recipe for disaster. The Flyers have the 23rd ranked penalty kill in the league, while the Rangers are seventh-best on the man-advantage.

Also, as CSN Philly points out, winning close games has been issue this season. Wednesday’s tilt was the 11th time in 21 games that the Flyers have gone into the third period tied or ahead and have come out on the losing end.

This should be a great one!
