Columbus Blue Jackets forward Matt Calvert had quite a Friday night against the New York Rangers.
It started a bad note when he had to leave the game after he was hit in the face by a slap shot that left behind a pool of blood on the Columbus ice.
But after getting stitched back up -- according to him after the game it was more than 30 stitches -- and passing a concussion test as part of the NHL’s concussion protocol, he was eventually able to return to the game and score what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The goal was a shorthanded tally midway through the third period and came just minutes after the Rangers had erased a two-goal deficit.

Hey! Don’t look now but the Columbus Blue Jackets are starting to play some pretty decent hockey and are now off to the best start (9-4-2) in franchise history through 15 games.
Entering their game on Friday against the New York Rangers they were 6-1-1 over their previous eight games, including wins over Montreal (10-0!), Dallas, St. Louis (8-4!), Washington, and Anaheim. By beating the Rangers on Friday they added another win over another one of the NHL’s top teams to that list.
It also snapped what had been a three-game winning streak for the Rangers.
