Thanks to their 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Friday night the Edmonton Oilers are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 2010-11 season.

Both of their wins this season have come against their provincial rivals, and in both games second-year standout Connor McDavid has put on quite a show.

After a three-point game in the Oilers’ season opening 7-4 win on Wednesday, McDavid followed it up with yet another three-point game on Friday. He entered the season as one of the leading favorites to win the NHL scoring title. So far he is not disappointing.

McDavid started the scoring for the Oilers on Friday with his third goal of the season when he used his game-breaking speed to get behind the Flames defense and almost effortlessly beat Brian Elliott on a breakaway.

After that goal, he would add a pair of assists on power play goals scored by Jordan Eberle and Leon Draisaitl.

Draisaitl would add an empty net goal to help put the game away, while Mark Letestu’s shorthanded goal proved to be the game-winner.

As for McDavid, his six points so far this season give him an early (a very early!) lead in the NHL scoring race. Combined with his numbers a year ago in his injury shortened rookie season, McDavid already has 53 points in his first 47 NHL games. That is a 1.14 point per game average.

Keep in mind that over the past three seasons only three players (Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane and Evgeni Malkin) have averaged more than 1.14 points per game in a season. It is a stunning level of production for any player, let alone one that is still only 19 years old.
