Maple Leafs’ Hunwick leaves game after big hit from Chris Neil

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Matt Hunwick had a rough start to the 2016-17 season on Wednesday night, playing just 2:11 in their game against the Ottawa Senators before he had to leave with an injury.

The injury happened early in the first period when he was crushed along the boards by Senators forward Chris Neil, resulting in a rather nasty looking cut above his eye.

Hunwick did not return to the game for the remainder of the first period. Before the start of the second period the Maple Leafs officially announced that Hunwick was being held out of the game for precautionary reasons due to an “upper body injury.”

Hunwick, 31, in his second season with the Maple Leafs after signing a two-year, $2.4 million contract a year ago. In 60 games in 2015-16 he scored two goals to go with eight assists.
