Don Maloney has found his next NHL gig. The former GM of the Arizona Coyotes has been hired as a pro scout in the Calgary Flames organization.

Maloney spent nine years as the general manager in Arizona before being fired this off-season.

The 57-year-old helped guide the ‘Yotes to three playoff appearances during his tenure. He was named the NHL General Manager of the Year in 2009-10, when the Coyotes finished with a franchise record 107 points.

Maloney and current Flames GM Brad Treliving go way back.

Treliving and Maloney are familiar with each other from their years together in Phoenix. Treliving was Maloney’s assistant GM from 2003 to 2014.

When the Flames hired Treliving in 2014, Maloney couldn’t have been happier for his colleague.

“Now it’s his turn in the driver’s seat,” Maloney said of Treliving after he was hired by the Flames, per the Calgary Herald. “Success creates opportunities and for us to have survived our ownership saga and have some relative success on the ice, certainly people start looking at the organization and say ‘OK, who’s there, who’s doing what and can they help us.’ In Brad’s case, he’s done the work and been an important part in us surviving in the desert here which certainly makes him attractive to other teams.”
