Capitals’ Alzner still isn’t 100 percent healthy, but he should be ready for camp

Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner has been remarkably healthy during his NHL career. The 27-year-old is currently riding a 458-game iron man streak, so it was surprising to see him go down in the playoffs.

Alzner suffered a sports hernia injury and eventually tore his groin. He underwent off-season surgery in June and although he isn’t 100 percent healthy yet, he’s expecting to be ready for the start of training camp.

“I was working out after the first week [following the procedure], which was fast,” Alzner said, per CSN Mid-Atlantic. “The hernia is going to be fine. The only thing is the groin; I’m still waiting for that to be 100-percent.

“I can do everything now, but I’m just maybe a half step slow because I can’t get the full extension with the power, the little kick at the end. Once I get that kick back, then I’m 90-100 [percent]. So, I’m close.”

The team’s doctors have told Alzner that the two injuries are likely related. The Caps defenseman said he felt his groin “start to go” in the first round series against Philadelphia before he tore it in Game 6 against Pittsburgh in the following round.
