The biggest move the Carolina Hurricanes made this summer was the trade to acquire Bryan Bichell and Teuvo Teravainen from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for two draft picks (a second rounder in 2016 and a third rounder in 2017).
In some ways it was a pretty shocking trade because just two years ago Teravainen was making a huge impact for the Blackhawks during their 2015 Stanley Cup run and looked to be on his way to becoming a core player and a part of their next wave of young talent to complement their superstars. But following a 2015-16 season where he did not quite take the step that was expected in his development, he was used as a bargaining chip to help the Blackhawks unload a salary (Bickell’s) they no longer wanted or could afford to have on their salary cap.
The Hurricanes were there to benefit and added another talented young player to an improving core that already includes Jeff Skinner, Victor Rask, Elias Lindholm, Justin Faulk and Noah Hanifan.
The question now is whether or not a new situation, with what should be an increased role, will allow Teravainen to take the next step in his development and go from being a promising young player that has shown flashes of brilliance, to becoming a top-line player in the NHL.
He should definitely get the playing time, and the talent is obviously there.
So, will he fully reach that potential with the Hurricanes?
