The Carolina Hurricanes locked up defenseman Jake Bean and forward Julien Gauthier to three-year entry-level contracts on Saturday morning.

The ‘Canes selected Bean with the 13th overall pick in last June’s NHL Entry Draft. The 18-year-old had 24 goals and 64 points in 68 games with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen. Per the team’s website, the deal with pay Bean $832,500 if he plays in the NHL and $70,000 in the AHL.

“It was great having Jake here for our development camp this week, and getting to know him better as a person and player,” general manager Ron Francis said in a release. “He has a bright future in our organization and we are looking forward to seeing him again at the rookie tournament and during training camp.”

Gauthier was selected with the first round pick (21st overall) Carolina acquired in the Andrej Sekera trade with Los Angeles in 2015. The 18-year-old scored an impressive 41 goals in 54 games in the QMJHL in 2015-16, but his production dipped at the end of the season.

Like Bean, Gauthier will make $832,000 if he sticks in the NHL and $70,000 if he goes down to the AHL in the first three years of his professional career.

“For an 18-year-old, Julien already has the body of a professional hockey player,” said Francis. “He had a great week in Raleigh for development camp, and will play an important role in the Hurricanes’ future.”
