It’s safe to say that Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin isn’t pleased with colleague Jim Benning. Earlier this week, the Canucks general manager went public with his interest in Habs defenseman P.K. Subban. Benning’s comments added fuel to an already wild fire.
During the same interview, Benning also explained that his team will have interest in potential free agents Milan Lucic and Steven Stamkos. Everyone knows those two players will hit the market in a few days, but for now they’re still property of their respective teams.
“I was not happy and I’m still not happy about that,” Bergevin said, per the Vancouver Sun. “The league is looking into it.
“He crossed the line. I don’t know where the line was crossed but he definitely crossed the line. It can’t happen.”
Minutes before the start of the first round on Friday, Benning was asked if there were any developments when it came to the team’s interest in Subban and his answer was very different.
“I can’t comment on other teams’ players,” Benning told Sportsnet. “I talked to the league today and they’re reviewing it.”
It wouldn’t be shocking to see him come away with a fine.
