The Detroit Red Wings got some business taken care of on Wednesday morning, as they reportedly re-signed Riley Sheahan to a two-year deal worth a total of $4.15 million. Sheahan will come with a cap hit of $2.075 million.

It’s a nice salary bump for Sheahan, who made $1.050 million last year.

Sheahan was originally selected in the first round, 21st overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

The 24-year-old scored a career-high 14 goals during the 2015-16 season, but saw his point total dip from 36 in 2014-15 to 25 last year.

Brad Richards likely hitting the open market on July 1st is a good thing for Sheahan. It could lead to him getting more opportunities on the power play and more ice time overall.

Detroit has roughly $11 million dollars in cap space, according to General Fanager. They have 11 forwards (including Pavel Datsyuk), four defenseman and one goalie under contract for next season.

Restricted free agent Petr Mrazek is one the players that needs to be re-signed. He’ll probably eat a decent chunk of that $11 million. Trading Datsyuk’s cap hit to a team looking to get to the cap floor would go a long way in helping the Red Wings’ cap situation this off-season.
