Barberio, who’s from Montreal, signed with the Habs as an unrestricted free agent last off-season after spending parts of three seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The 26-year-old had two goals and 10 points in 30 games in 2015-16. Those numbers don’t really stand out, but he played well after being recalled from the AHL. Unfortunately for Barberio, a concussion forced him to miss the final 11 games of the regular season.
The Canadiens now have seven defensemen on one-way contracts for the 2016-17 season. They include: Barberio, P.K. Subban, Andrei Markov, Jeff Petry, Alexei Emelin, Nathan Beaulieu and Greg Pateryn. Barberio will be in the running for a spot on the bottom pairing and second power play unit.
