Team USA finished the group stage of the 2016 World Hockey Championship with an underwhelming 3-3-1 record, but it was enough to push them through to the quarter-finals.

On Tuesday, the Americans suffered a 3-2 OT loss to Team Slovakia after Jets forward Marko Dano scored the game-winner. It’s important to note that Team USA qualified for the knockout round when Slovakia failed to win the game in regulation time.

Brock Nelson (Islanders) and Nick Foligno (Blue Jackets) scored for Team USA. Senators prospect Christian Jaros and Pavel Skalicky found the back of the net for Slovakia in regulation.

“We were trying to take the game to them,” said the U.S.'s Frank Vatrano, per the IIHF’s website. “They needed that regulation win to get in. We came in and tried to play good defense and get some goals when we needed them. We are looking forward to heading into the next round.”
