The New York Rangers were dealt a serious blow when Henrik Lundqvist was forced from Game 1 of their first-round series against Pittsburgh. Lundqvist left the game after taking a high-stick from teammate Marc Staal.
“He’ll be reevaluated tomorrow (Thursday),” Alain Vigneault said after Wednesday’s game, per the Daily News. “I’ll have more news tomorrow.”
Although the Rangers haven’t made any type of announcement regarding Lundqvist’s status yet, they did recall goalie Magnus Hellberg from the AHL.
Recalling Hellberg might indicate that Lundqvist won’t be ready for Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Saturday afternoon. Of course, it could also mean that they want to keep Lundqvist off the ice until game-time, with Hellberg being used in team practices.
In 53 games with AHL Hartford this season, Hellberg had a 30-20-3 record with a 2.40 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage. The 25-year-old made one 20-minute appearance for the Rangers in 2015-16.
The Rangers will likely provide an update on Lundqvist later on this morning.
New York trails 1-0 in the series.
