Pens extend winning streak to six games by dropping six goals on Flyers

The Pittsburgh Penguins are playing their best hockey at the perfect time. No one seems to be able to stop the Pens, not even the surging Flyers.

The Penguins scored at least five goals for the fourth game in a row, as they took down the Flyers 6-2 on Sunday. The win was their sixth in a row and 12th in their last 13 games.

They continue to get the job done without some of their best players. Marc-Andre Fleury, Olli Maatta and Evgeni Malkin were out with injuries.

Captain Sidney Crosby opened the scoring with a power play goal at the 15:38 mark of the opening period. Crosby’s teammate Beau Bennett doubled Pittsburgh’s lead just 1:05 later.

The 28-year-old has picked up at least one point in 18 of his last 19 contests. He has 33 goals and 82 points in 78 games in 2015-16. Not bad for a guy who started the season with just three points in his first nine games.

Patric Hornqvist gave the Pens a 3-0 lead in the second frame before Wayne Simmonds finally got the Flyers on the board.

Pittsburgh broke the game open in the third period. They got goals from Carl Hagelin and Eric Fehr (twice).

The victory ensures the Penguins can’t finish lower than the first Wild Card spot in the East. That means that there’s no way Pittsburgh and Washington can meet in the opening round.

Despite the loss, the Flyers still own the final Wild Card spot in the conference. They’re one point ahead of the Bruins (they lost to Chicago today) with a game in hand.

Philadelphia’s been in must-win mode for a while. They’ve done a very good job picking up points down the stretch, but they know they need at least six more points to have a chance at making the postseason.
