Avs get pounded by Blues, but they’re not (officially) out of it yet

The Colorado Avalanche needed a great effort and two points in the standings and they didn’t get either of those things, as they dropped a 5-1 decision to the St. Louis Blues.

The Blues wasted no time jumping all over the Avs. David Backes, Magnus Paajarvi and Colton Parayko all scored in the first period to give St. Louis an early/commanding lead going into the first intermission.

Here’s Parayko’s goal:

Unfortunately for St. Louis, it wasn’t all positive. Starting goaltender Jake Allen never came out for the start of the second period. He was replaced by tonight’s backup goalie, Anders Nilsson.

Despite losing Allen, the Blues managed to extend their lead when Alex Pietrangelo made it 4-0 in the middle frame.

Matt Duchene finally got the Avs on the board in the third period, but it was too little too late for a team that’s getting closer and closer to kissing the 2016 playoffs goodbye.

Coming into Sunday’s game, the Colorado Avalanche didn’t have a great shot at making the playoffs and the 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Blues certainly won’t help. Luckily for Colorado, they aren’t officially eliminated from playoff contention yet because the Minnesota Wild lost to the Jets tonight.

Even though they’re not officially eliminated yet, things don’t look good for Colorado.

Here’s an updated look at the Wild Card “race” in the West:

Wild Card

The Blues clinched a playoff spot a while ago, but they’re still looking to climb the Central Division standings. Tonight’s win puts them two points behind Dallas for top spot in the division. The Stars currently trail 2-0 in Anaheim.
