Hunter Shinkaruk has his first career National Hockey League goal.
A first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, the 21-year-old Shinkaruk deflected a Mark Giordano power play point shot to get his new team, the Calgary Flames, on the board during Wednesday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. That made the score 5-1 for Anaheim.
The Canucks, with Mike Gillis as their general manager at the time, selected Shinkaruk 24th overall.
However, last month, just before the NHL trade deadline, the Canucks and current GM Jim Benning dealt Shinkaruk to Calgary in exchange for Markus Granlund in a highly controversial trade for Canucks fans.
Shinkaruk had played only once for the Canucks.
In two games with the Flames — including Wednesday’s contest in Anaheim — since getting called up from the AHL, Shinkaruk has a goal and an assist.
