Goalie nods: Conditioning stint for Schneider, so it’s on Wedgewood

Scott Wedgewood

The New Jersey Devils seem poised to lean on Cory Schneider for the foreseeable future, but Schneider knows firsthand how useful (and promising) a backup goalie can be.

For much of this season, the Devils turned to Keith Kinkaid when Schneider was banged up or in need of a breather.

Scott Wedgewood has instead been given a shot lately, and he’s been absolutely on fire, so the Devils are throwing him out there again to see if he can keep it up. He’ll be given a chance to keep the Devils’ flimsy playoff hopes alive as they face the pesky Carolina Hurricanes and Cam Ward, a goalie hoping to gain the attention of suitors as unrestricted free agency nears.

Wedgewood’s hot streak makes it that much easier to send Schneider to the AHL for a conditioning stint, as the Devils did today.
