The Colorado Avalanche are coming off back-to-back wins over the Vancouver Canucks and the Calgary Flames , but those victories came at a cost.

On Wednesday, the Avs lost Matt Duchene to a knee injury and the following game it was MacKinnon’s turn to exit with the same ailment. Duchene is considered day-to-day, but he unable to play against the Flames on Friday night.

As for MacKinnon, we still don’t know the severity of his injury. The Avalanche are expected to provide an update on his status at some point on Saturday. The odds of him playing against Edmonton on Sunday don’t seem promising because Colorado has promoted top prospect Mikko Rantanen from AHL San Antonio.

Rantanen played in six NHL games earlier this season. He had no points and a minus-5 rating in his first stint with the Avalanche. Things went much better for him in the AHL, as he had 21 goals and 52 points in 44 games.

If the 19-year-old plays four more NHL games this season, he’ll burn the first year of his entry-level contract. He was Colorado’s first round pick, 10th overall, in 2015.
