‘We’ve got to be better than that,’ says Toews after loss to Stars

By the middle of the second period, this one had the makings of a blowout.

The Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks met on Friday in a showdown for first in the Central Division and Western Conference. But what began as a highly anticipated game turned into a lopsided 5-2 victory for the Stars.

Dallas jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second period, chasing Corey Crawford from the Chicago net.

The Stars move atop the Central Division with 90 points. The St. Louis Blues, who were also victorious on Friday, are second with 89 points and the Blachhawks drop to third with 88 points.

The Stars, without the likes of Patrick Sharp, John Klingberg, Jason Demers and Jordie Benn, got standout performances from their top players. Jason Spezza opened the scoring and now has goals in five straight games.

Jamie Benn had a goal and an assist. Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist.

And the Stars’ power play went two-for-six.

“It’s almost like that week [when] we were in Detroit then Boston, where I think we played well in the first game on the road. Obviously we didn’t get the result we wanted to in St. Louis, and we kind of had a drop-off the second game,” said Jonathan Toews, as per CSN Chicago.

“Tonight was the same way and we ran into a team that was sitting here and ready for us and we didn’t have the speed and the work ethic in the battles in the corners that we needed. So eventually we ended up taking penalties and ended up hurting ourselves. We’ve got to be better than that.”
