Dion Phaneuf appeared to get a little choked up in his return to Toronto as a member of the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
A former captain in Toronto, Phaneuf spent six years with the Maple Leafs, from 2010 until Feb. 9 of this year when he was traded to the rival Senators in a blockbuster.
The fans in Toronto saluted Phaneuf during a stoppage in play, although it’s likely there were a few boos mixed in there, too. (His former teammates, showing a sense of humor, booed him during the morning skate.)
Phaneuf appeared to wipe away tears with his glove, before applauding the crowd.
Phaneuf also experienced emotions of a different kind, as he fought Colin Greening -- acquired from Ottawa in that same deal -- in the first period.
