The Edmonton Oilers were busy extending two of their young players on Monday morning.
They’ve locked up defenseman Brandon Davidson to a two-year, $2.85 million contract extension (1.425 aav) and goalie Laurent Brossoit to a two-year, one-way deal worth $1.5 million ($750,000 aav).
Davidson and Brossoit were both set to become restricted free agents at the end of the season.
Despite being a healthy scratch in seven of the first eight games of the season, Davidson has been able to cement himself as a fixture in Edmonton’s group of regular defensemen. The 24-year-old doesn’t play a flashy game, but he’s been effective. He has four goals, 10 points and a plus-6 rating in 47 games.
For Brossoit, getting a one-way deal shows just how much the team believes in his abilities. He’s played in just two NHL games in his career, but he’s been fantastic in those outings. Brossoit made 49 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Sharks last season and he gave up one goal on 33 shots in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Jets earlier this month.
The Oilers like Brossoit’s upside so much they decided to ship Anders Nilsson to the St. Louis Blues earlier this week.
