Howard turns in a solid performance, but Wings still fall to Rangers in OT

Henrik Lundqvist had his fourth shutout of the season as the Rangers defeated the Red Wings 1-0 on Kevin Klein's overtime-winner to wrap up Hockey Day in America.

It’s been a tough year for Jimmy Howard.

The 31-year-old went from sharing the starting gig with Petr Mrazek to becoming the seldom used backup goaltender.

Howard was able to put those struggles aside on Sunday night’s game against the New York Rangers.

Howard turned in a dominant performance, and made several key saves throughout the evening, but it wasn’t enough, as the Rangers beat the Wings, 1-0, in overtime.

He even stopped a penalty shot late in the third period.

The Rangers thought they took the lead in the third period, but Kevin Hayes’ goal was waved off after review.

It was defenseman Kevin Klein who scored the overtime winner:

The Rangers have a pretty good goalie of their own, as Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 22 shots in the shutout victory.

The other teams in the Eastern Conference probably won’t be pleased that this ended being a three-point game.

Here’s an updated look at the standings:

The Red Wings trail the Lightning and Bruins by one point for the second and third spots in the Atlantic Division.
