Mother Nature has forced the NHL to postpone another regular season game.

The League announced that Sunday’s game between the Penguins and Capitals will be postponed because of a"severe snowstorm”.

Here’s the release:

The game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals at Verizon Center scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24, NHL Game No. 720, has been postponed due to the severe snowstorm impacting the Washington, D.C., area. A makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed.

Making the Penguins leave for Washington earlier wasn’t possible because Pittsburgh hosts the Vancouver Canucks at 12:30 pm ET today.

As the release mentions, no makeup date has been announced, but Capitals Insider Chuck Gormley of CSN Mid-Atlantic brought up the possibility of this game being played on Monday afternoon.

From CSN:

The Penguins are scheduled to play the Vancouver Canucks today at 12:30 at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh and there were obvious concerns about how the Penguins would be able to get into Washington.

Both teams have available dates on Monday and with the Wizards set to play at Verizon Center on Monday night, an afternoon game between the Caps and Penguins is a possibility.

This is the second straight game the NHL has had to cancel in Washington. Yesterday’s contest between the Ducks and Capitals was also postponed for the same reasons.

“I would say D.C. is one of the worst cities for handling snow,” said former Capital and current Penguin Eric Fehr, per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “If you get about an inch or even a threat of snow coming, the city shuts down.”

*Update: The league also announced that Saturday’s game between the Flyers and Islanders will also be postponed.
