500 reasons to celebrate: Ovechkin scores 500th career goal on Sunday (Update: He scored again)

The moment Capitals fans have been waiting for has finally arrived.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 500th NHL goal in the second period of Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Senators.

The 30-year-old became the fifth-fastest player (and the first Russian) in league history to reach the 500-goal mark.

  1. Wayne Gretzky 575 games
  2. Mario Lemieux 605 games
  3. Mike Bossy 647 games
  4. Brett Hull 693 games
  5. Alex Ovechkin 801 games

“I’m happy we did in front of our fans. My parents are here. Obviously it’s sad, my fiancee is just gonna come back here tomorrow,” Ovechkin said on Sportsnet during the second intermission. “It’s a special moment. All my teammates came to the ice to congratulate me. I’m gonna remember it for all my life.

“Trotzy and all the boys told me like ‘go back on the ice and celebrate it’. Like I said, it’s a great time. You know, it’s history and it’s nice to be part of it, and it’s nice to be in that company. Without my teammates, without my coaches it wouldn’t have happened.”

Since entering the NHL in 2005, Ovechkin leads the league in several offensive categories, including goals (500), points (933), power-play goals (185), power play points (367) and game-winning goals (85).

*Update: Goal no. 501 was even more impressive than the last one.
