Video: Red Wings score winning goal seconds after Mrazek’s spectacular stick save

A big save at one end of the rink led to the eventual winning goal at the other for the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.

Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek made an unbelievable, desperation stick save on San Jose Sharks forward Joel Ward as he made a deke to the backhand in front of the net. Mrazek reach up with the stick and knocked the puck down, denying San Jose the go-ahead goal late in the third period.

Just 13 seconds later, after the Wings transitioned into the San Jose end, Justin Abdelkader ripped a slap shot past Martin Jones. That gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead and they would hold on to win by that score.

And then, at the final buzzer, frustrations boiled over with a massive scrum along the boards. Joe Thornton racked up 14 penalty minutes as a result of the melee.
