Alexander Steen had the time, he had the space and, as a result, he made the Nashville Predators pay.
Steen scored the overtime winner for the St. Louis Blues -- notching his 13th goal of the season -- in a 4-3 victory over their Central Division rivals from Nashville on Tuesday.
Sent in all alone on a breakaway in the three-on-three session, Steen beat Carter Hutton blocker side, securing two valuable points for St. Louis in its bid to get back into the race for top spot in the Central.
With Dallas losing in regulation in Columbus, the Blues now move to within seven points of the first-place Stars.
Meanwhile, the Predators, sitting in the second Western Conference Wild Card spot, gain a single point when it looked for a time in the third period like they would come away empty-handed.
Playing for the second time in as many nights, and with travel to St. Louis, the Predators fell behind the Blues by two goals in the third period, before Shea Weber and Colin Wilson scored 2:20 apart late in regulation to force overtime.
