Many people believe the Montreal Canadiens are an average team without Carey Price. It’s hard to argue with that logic based on the results the team has had in December.

Price has been on injured reserve twice this year.

The Canadiens survived his first stint on I.R. because rookie goalie Mike Condon was solid (5-2-2).

Price returned for three games before heading back to the injured list, but this time, his replacements are struggling. The Habs are 2-8-0 in December and they’ve lost four games in a row.

After Monday’s 5-1 loss to the Nashville Predators, Therrien called out his goaltenders.

“We need a better performance from goaltending, obviously,” said Therrien when asked about what’s missing from his team. “Every goalie that we faced, right now, they end up having the first star.”

The Canadiens may want to consider adding a veteran goaltender until Price returns in mid-to-late January because teams in the Atlantic Division are catching up quick.

Montreal’s once enormous lead is down to one point over Boston, two points over Detroit, three points over Florida, four points over Ottawa and six points over Tampa (each of those teams has at least one game in hand on Montreal).
