That was quick: Rangers demote Skjei after ‘frustrating’ loss to Wild

Brady Skjei’s time with the New York Rangers will be brief.

On Friday, the club sent its prized d-man prospect back to AHL Hartford, just one day after Skjei played his second NHL contest -- a 5-2 loss in Minnesota, a game that fellow blueliner Marc Staal called “frustrating.”

Skjei, 21, was New York’s first round pick (28th overall) in 2012.

He made his NHL debut in Tuesday’s win over Edmonton but, after playing just 15:17 last night and taking the penalty that led to Jason Pominville’s eventual game-winning goal, he’s been returned to the Wolf Pack in favor of Chris Summers.

Summers, 27, is expected to make his season debut tonight in Winnipeg. His cap hit plays a role; Summers is a smaller hit than Skjei, and the Rangers needed space to recall goalie Magnus Hellberg from Hartford to replace Antti Raanta.

Raanta was hurt during last night’s game after taking a slap shot to the mask.
