Leafs’ Bernier ends conditioning stint on a low note

Things were going so well for Jonathan Bernier...until Sunday.

After shutting out the opposition in the first three games of his conditioning stint, Bernier allowed five goals on 26 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Utica Comets.

You can watch the highlights by clicking the video at the top of the page.

Overall, Bernier’s conditioning stint went well. He stopped 91 of 96 shots in four games with the Marlies, but it’ll be interesting to see how he bounces back after allowing all five goals on Sunday.

The 27-year-old is expected to rejoin the Leafs sometime before Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 2015-16 season has been a disaster for Bernier, who has an 0-8-1 record with a 3.28 goals-against-average and a .888 save percentage.

He’s allowed four goals or more in four of his nine appearances in ’15-16.

If James Reimer (undisclosed) can’t suit up on Tuesday night, the Leafs could opt to give Bernier the nod against the Bolts.

Should Reimer be healthy enough to return, Toronto would probably assign rookie Garret Sparks back to the AHL.
