Rangers lose to Flames in OT after furious third-period comeback

For a second straight evening, the New York Rangers were involved in a high-scoring contest that included an abundance of third-period goals but again ended with a loss.

On Friday, it was a 7-5 loss to the Edmonton Oilers. On Saturday, it was a 5-4 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames. That concludes the Rangers’ trip through Western Canada that resulted in one of a possible six points. There was also a regulation loss in Vancouver at the beginning of the trip.

It looked, however, at one point in the third period of Saturday’s game like the Rangers were going back to New York with absolutely nothing.

The Rangers were on the verge of being swept, trailing Calgary by three goals early in the third period after conceding goals to Johnny Gaudreau -- what a slick move he made on Antti Raanta on the breakaway -- and Joe Colborne before cuing the comeback.

Tanner Glass, Dan Boyle and Mats Zuccarello scored for New York to send the game into overtime.

It was in the three-on-three extra frame that Gaudreau was his usual dangerous self. He didn’t score, despite two glorious chances created by his speed and skill, but assisted on the winning goal from T.J. Brodie.

The Rangers now have only one win in six games to begin December.

Meanwhile, the Flames have won five in a row -- only two of those in regulation -- to conclude this home stand with a 5-0-0 record. They’ve also won nine in a row on home ice dating back to early November.
