It’s rare to see a team form a 2-on-0 rush from inside its own defensive end. But it seems just about anything has become possible during these often chaotic -- and entertaining -- three-on-three overtime periods.
The New York Islanders -- more specifically Josh Bailey and Kyle Okposo -- found themselves in just such a situation against the Columbus Blue Jackets in the overtime session during Saturday’s game.
With plenty of time to spare after a Columbus turnover inside the New York zone, Okposo took a drop pass from Bailey and deked out goalie Curtis McElhinney to give the Islanders a 3-2 victory.
“It’s unfortunate,” said Ryan Johansen, as per NHL.com. “You want to try and make the play. We had an odd-man rush and they made a good play to get a stick on it and bang, they’re off the other way.”
The Blue Jackets appeared to have the winning goal in the final minute of the third period, however officials deemed after a video review that Boone Jenner kicked the puck in.
From the NHL’s Situation Room blog: “At 19:12 of the third period in the New York Islanders/Columbus Blue Jackets game, video review determined that Boone Jenner kicked the puck into the New York net. According to Rule 49.2 “A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net.” No goal Columbus.”
