Hamhuis has facial fracture, will require surgery

Dan Hamhuis suffered a facial fracture last night and will have surgery tomorrow, the Vancouver Canucks announced today.

A timeline for the veteran defenseman’s return has yet to be determined, but it’s expected he’ll be out multiple weeks, if not multiple months.

Hamhuis was struck in the face with a puck Wednesday evening against the New York Rangers. He left the game, bleeding badly, and was expected to spend the night in the hospital.

Obviously, terrible luck for Hamhuis. But also, a significant loss for Vancouver. The 32-year-old was averaging around 20 minutes a night before he was injured, and despite the fact he wasn’t enjoying his finest season, the Canucks aren’t exactly overflowing with proven top-4 defensemen.

In fact, they only have two healthy ones left: Alex Edler and Chris Tanev. (And to call Tanev “healthy” may be a stretch.)

Hamhuis is also a pending unrestricted free agent who could be in play at the trade deadline, so there’s that aspect to consider as well.
