New Jersey may have come out on top against Carolina on Thursday night, but it came at a cost, as they lost forward Travis Zajac to an upper-body injury.

Zajac was injured less than eight minutes into the game. He suffered the injury after he was taken down by ‘Canes forward Kris Versteeg.

He won’t suit up in Friday’s game against the Flyers and the Devils still don’t know exactly how much time he’ll be forced to miss.

It’s not easy being down one of your top two centers so early in the game, but head coach John Hynes liked the way his team responded to the adversity.

“It was important for guys to be able to step up and we played a bit shorthanded,” Hynes said, per the Record. “Obviously, Travis is a big loss, but I like the way we responded. Coming into this month, we knew we were going to face some adversity, and we’re going to need all the guys in our lineup.”

The 30-year-old has six goals and 15 points in 24 games this season.
