Howard injured in Wings’ 4-1 loss to Stars

The Detroit Red Wings came into this season without a clear-cut number one goalie.

After 14 games, Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek have each received seven starts, but that might have to change.

As you can see in the video at the top of the page, Howard was knocked out of Sunday’s 4-1 loss to Dallas after taking Jason Spezza’s knee to the head in the third period.

Just minutes after Howard’s injury, things got even uglier as Stars forward Ales Hemsky took a run at Jonathan Ericsson behind Detroit’s net.

Hemsky appears to make contact with Ericsson’s head while leaping off the ice.

A bloodied Ericsson took exception to the hit and was given the only penalty on the play.

Dallas has now won three games in a row and six of their last seven. They are off to their best start in franchise history.

The Stars got two first period goals from Patrick Sharp (5) and Valeri Nichushkin (1) and two empty net goals from Tyler Seguin (9) and Cody Eakin (5) in the third.

Gustav Nyquist scored Detroit’s only goal.
