Backbreaker: Backes scores in overtime to sink Wild

To say that David Backes has struggled this season would be an understatement.

The Blues forward entered tonight’s game with just two assists in 10 games, but he managed to double his point total by scoring twice in St. Louis’ 3-2 overtime win over Minnesota.

Backes’ first goal wasn’t pretty (Devan Dubnyk will want this one back), and his second goal in the three-on-three overtime session secured two points in the standings for his team.

The Blues built up a 2-0 lead in the first period just to see it evaporate before the end of the frame, as Minnesota got goals from Jason Zucker and Erik Haula. Neither team would score until Backes ended the game in overtime.

Here’s what coach Ken Hitchcock had to say about the new overtime format:

The Blues have now won three straight games.
