Roy maintains Avs are ‘doing a lot of good things out there’

Ask most people and they’d say things are not looking good for the Colorado Avalanche.

Stuck in the brutally tough Central Division, the Avs (2-4-1) are already six points back of a playoff spot. On Saturday, they lost at home to Columbus, a team that was 0-8-0.

Still, head coach Patrick Roy was trying to stay positive after falling to the Blue Jackets.

“It’s just a matter right now to manage our game a little bit better,” Roy told the Denver Post. “And I think that could make the big difference between losing and winning. Because we’re doing a lot of good things out there. ... I think we’re going to be just fine.”

Of course, the Avalanche’s possession stats say otherwise, but we all know what Roy thinks of Corsi.

Colorado begins a three-game road trip Tuesday in Sunrise against the Panthers. Thursday it’s Tampa Bay and Friday it’s Carolina.

The Avs won’t have much of a chance of turning things around if Semyon Varlamov’s save percentage doesn’t start climbing. Among goalies with at least five starts, only Sergei Bobrovsky (.852) and Tuukka Rask (.854) have lower numbers than Varlamov (.869).

That’s not all on Varlamov, but when a team gets outshot as regularly as the Avs do, the goaltender’s importance is only amplified.
