Ovechkin was scratched for oversleeping

Even Alex Ovechkin can’t get away with oversleeping.

The Washington Capitals’ captain revealed this morning that he was held out of the lineup last night versus San Jose after he failed to wake up in time for yesterday’s morning skate.

The Capitals lost badly to the Sharks, 5-0.

This isn’t the first time an NHL star has been disciplined for a similar offense. Just last April, Tyler Seguin was late for practice and made a healthy scratch for the Dallas Stars’ season finale.

Still, it didn’t take long for Caps fans to shift into damage-control mode:

Washington hosts Chicago tomorrow. And yes, Ovechkin is expected to be back in the lineup.
