Orpik back skating with Caps

Brooks Orpik (wrist) was on the ice with his teammates for the first time since the start of training camp.

The 35-year-old underwent wrist surgery in July and although many expected him to be available for at least one preseason game, that probably won’t happen.

Per CSN, Orpik hasn’t ruled out playing in Sunday’s final exhibition game against the Islanders but that isn’t likely.

The stay-at-home defenseman is a key cog on Washington’s blueline. He averaged 21:47 of ice time in his first season with the Capitals after coming over from Pittsburgh as a free agent.

It looks like Washington will be able to count on Orpik’s physicality and strong defensive play once the team’s regular season kicks off on Oct. 10 against New Jersey.

Fellow blueliner Matt Niskanen missed Friday’s practice to attend the birth of his first child.
