When Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano suffered torn biceps that required surgery, there was speculation that the Calgary Flames might collapse. After all he wasn’t just their leader, he was arguably a strong Norris Trophy contender before he got hurt.

The Flames showed resilience by not only making the playoffs, but also getting to the second round. However, they now find themselves down 2-1 in their series against the Anaheim Ducks. Getting Giordano back now would be a big boost. He’s not ready yet, but he is making some progress.

The 31-year-old defenseman participated in a lengthy practice on Thursday that included some contact. He took it as a positive and is upbeat about his progress overall. At the same time, he needs to continue strengthening the area, gradually shoot harder, and continue to take progressively more contact.

“It’s still pretty early with this type of injury so we got to be smart about it,” Giordano cautioned, per the Flames’ website. “It seems like every day is getting better and better so it’s been all positive.

“At the end of the day you’ve got to leave it up to the number one guy to take advice from is our surgeon -- who has seen a lot of these before -- and go from there.”

In the meantime, the best thing the Flames can do for Giordano is continue to extend their run so that the odds of him returning increase. Calgary will play in Game 4 on Friday.
