Jeff Gorton is a wanted man.

The assistant to GM Glen Sather in New York, Gorton -- already tied to the vacant GM gig in Boston -- is now reportedly on Toronto’s radar as well, per TSN’s Darren Dreger.

None of this should come as a big surprise. Gorton’s developed a reputation as one of the best assistants in the league since Sather hired him in 2007 and, previous to that, was regarded for work done as the assistant and interim GM with Boston (highlighted by the Tuukka Rask-for-Andrew Raycroft trade, which he orchestrated).

Gorton’s also long been viewed as Sather’s heir apparent with the Blueshirts, which is probably why Sather’s trying to keep him around.

“I haven’t given permission to anybody to speak to anyone and I won’t as long as we’re playing,” Sather told the New York Post recently. “And there’s a question whether I would, anyway, after it’s over.”

Gorton has one year remaining on his deal with the Rangers. Sather, who turns 72 this year, is one of the league’s oldest GMs (along with Ottawa’s Bryan Murray) and the third longest-tenured, having been with New York since 2000.
