The fallout continues for ex-NHLer Andre Deveaux following his vicious pregame slash of an opponent during Swedish league play — per news agency TT, Swedish prosecutors have issued a warrant for Deveaux’s arrest.
Prosecutors acted after viewing footage that’s gone viral over the last 72 hours. In a brief video clip Deveaux, playing for Swedish second division outfit Rogle, skates up to Vasteras’ Per Helmersson during pregame warmups and delivers a vicious slash to the back of Helmersson’s leg.
Deveaux later claimed he was seeking retribution for a hit Helmersson put on him in an earlier game. Rogle and Vasteras were battling for promotion to Sweden’s top division (Rogle eventually won, and will be in the No. 1 flight next season.)
Per Reuters, the attack has caused an “outcry” in Sweden and has been described as “the worst in the history of the domestic league.” Deveaux — who, it has to be mentioned, wasn’t penalized on the play — had his contract with Rogle terminated yesterday; the 32-year-old later released an apology to both the club and Helmersson.
