It was March 26, 1915, when the Vancouver Millionaires blasted the Ottawa Senators, 12-3, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals. That victory, 100 years ago today, completed the series sweep and gave the city of Vancouver (then with a metro population around 200,000, compared to 2.3 million now) its first and only Stanley Cup.

Teams from Vancouver have been to the Cup finals six times since (three by the Millionaires, three by the Canucks), losing all six times (five times in a deciding game, no less).

The Canucks will mark the 100-year anniversary tonight when they host the Avalanche at Rogers Arena, with the home team donning the Millionaires full replica jerseys, along with “storytelling of the championship team throughout the night, including in-game profiles on the Patrick brothers and Fred ‘Cyclone’ Taylor.”

To put Vancouver’s 100-year Stanley Cup drought in perspective, a few weeks after the Millionaires won the Cup, Charlie Chaplin’s famous film “The Tramp” was released...

...and a few weeks after that, Babe Ruth hit his first career home run.
